Keeping Work and Home Separate

Keeping Work and Home Separate

A lot of us are doing more work from home lately. Some of us have always done our work from home offices, or the kitchen table. Whatever the case it can often be difficult to keep your home and work life separate when working remotely. A formal office setting is separate from your daily life, providing you with dedicated space for your work. But you still need to be able to get things done, even if you’re at home. Let’s face it, keeping work and home separate doesn’t have to be that hard. You just have to set boundaries.

Set Hours

One of the best boundaries you can set for yourself as a remote worker is to designate certain hours as work hours. This isn’t any different from what you would do in an office, but it’s more important at home because those lines have been a bit blurred. Figure out when you do your best work and when you need to be working. Then write those hours down and hold them sacred. This will help more than you know.

Designate a Space

Just like you need to set time for work, you also need to set up space. Too often remote workers think they can work from any space in the home, but that’s simply not the case. Find a place in your home where you will work and set that spot aside. Put your home office in a place where you can do your best work and stay focused. When you sit down in that space, it’s work time. Just like your hours, make this space sacred and don’t use it for anything else.

Talk with Family

Setting boundaries is great, but they need to be honored by family and those living with you. Take some time to talk with your family about your hours and your designated workspace. Make sure they understand that these need to be honored to help you. Don’t be afraid to be insistent and firm with them either. This is your work and it deserves respect.
